Notes from Michelle
Choice This one simple word is such a central tenet of what Eagle Peak is all about. First, a group of concerned parents and educators made their choice to work together and build a Montessori school that would allow their children to continue being educated within a philosophy and curriculum they experienced and supported. Then, they made the choice to create a charter school, not a private school, but a public school, for their children and for all other children whose parents would then have a greater choice in educational options for their children. Next, Mt. Diablo Unified School District made the choice to grant the charter. More individuals then made choices in their lives that led them to come and to contribute to the educational process by being teachers, administrators, and additional staff at this incredible school. Each of the teachers made a conscious choice not to work in private schools, or even in traditional schools that may have offered more financial rewards, simply because they want to be a part of not just a Montessori school but a public Montessori school.
Literally hundreds of parents have now made the choice to bring their child to a school that is centered around the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. This philosophy in iteself allows a whole other level of choice for students.
All of this is to say, we as a group have chosen to be a part of a school that is different. Eight years ago, parents chose to become part of a school that took place in spare rooms at a church. Six years ago, parents came and saw a facility that was two trailers and a blacktop parking lot for a playground. They chose to send their children to that school because they saw what was happening inside those trailers and they knew this was the experience they wanted for their children.
Now, in 2009, over 11 years after the first ideas of Eagle Peak were initially developed, we have a beautiful campus that provides aesthetically pleasing surroundings both inside and outside the classrooms. However, it is still the education that is provided which continues to inspire more to make the choice of Eagle Peak.
There are always consequences of choice. Personally, I feel that in the case of Eagle Peak, we are fortunate that the consequence of the choices that have brought each one of us here is an opportunity to create and to be a part of something different from any other school.
